Back To School #PetEdition

The summer can be a great time for you and your pets.  With special trips, and extended time together...after all, IT IS SUMMER!!!  Perhaps your pet was even a new addition to the family over this summer.

With the back to school season upon us, schedules change, and this can lead to stress for your pet.
Here are our tips for a happy and health transition:
  • DO make time for healthy exercise at different times during the day.
  • DO NOT punish your pet if they are acting out due separation anxiety.  Instead, recognize that this behavior is a result of the changes they are experiencing, and work to alleviate this stress by helping them adjust to the new schedule.
  • DO encourage your children to play with your pets when they get home.
  • DO NOT get your pet overly excited when you leave or arrive home.  This enforces the stress that is created during the time you are away.
  • DO gradually increase the amount of time that your pet is left alone to help them acclimate to this new schedule.
  • DO NOT forget to give your pet enough water....they LOVE water and it's important they stay hydrated.
  • DO utilize routines.  For example, encouraging your pet to use a designated spot outdoors reinforces this action, and helps reduce the stress for everyone during busy mornings.
DO let us help!!!
...your pet ease into this new schedule,
...get some mid-day exercise, and
...on those evenings when the whole family has to be away from home (...did we mention how crazy back to school nights can be).

Swimming With Your Dog

These tips can help you and your dog enjoy all of the fun that comes with swimming.
  • DO help your dog to learn to swim with all four of their legs allowing them to be stronger swimmers, and conserve energy.

  • DO NOT get distracted by others.  Be very mindful of your dog's behavior.  Quickly get them out of the water at the first sign of over stimulation or exhaustion.
  • DO select environments appropriate for your dog's swimming ability.  Currents, rushing water, and waves may not be appropriate for your dog quite yet.
  • DO NOT be rough with your dog in this dangerous environment.  Instead, gradually introduce your dog to water.  Allow them to explore at their own speed.  Provide physical and verbal reassurance and praise.

  • DO rinse your dog off with clean water.  This removes chemicals, salt, and dirt that easily accumulate in their coat and on their sensitive skin.  Allowing your dog to remain wet for an extended period of time can cause discomfort, rashes, and health complications.
  • DO NOT allow your dog to drink pool/ocean/lake water.  Keep fresh, clean water readily available especially in hot weather.  Also allow for shady rest areas where your pet can recover from all of this excitement.
  • DO check with your vet before introducing your dog to this strenuous physical activity.
  • DO NOT assume that your dog knows how to get out of the water.  Make sure that your dog knows the safe way to exit the water.  This will reduce stress, and prevent dangerous confusion.
HEADED ON A TRIP THAT ISN'T PET FRIENDLY?
We would be happy to help take care of your pet while you're away.
  • DO consider a life jacket for your dog, especially during the learning stages.
  • DO NOT forget that your dog is easily excited by their environment.  For this reason you need to be aware of wildlife in the area, and how your dog might react to their surroundings.
  • DO have fun with your dog.  If this is something that you can enjoy together, GREAT...if not, make sure that you give them lots of love and attention.
  • DO continue reading the articles below.  This is where we gathered several of these great tips from, but there are more, and they each provide a unique view on the topic.
